Land Acknowledgement
Neighbourhood Information Post acknowledges that the land we work in is the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by the Toronto Purchase (Treaty 13), and the Williams Treaties,. We understand that this territory is included in the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe and allied nations to share and care for the area around the Great Lakes. We recognize that the history of Treaty 13 and the Williams Treaties call for ongoing reconciliation, and we acknowledge our shared responsibility to respect Indigenous Peoples and care for the land. We are thankful for the long history, knowledge, and stewardship of Indigenous Peoples, and honour their past and ongoing contributions to our communities.
We recognize the importance of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and are committed to doing our part by fostering learning, building respectful relationships, and supporting equitable access to programs and services for First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples
African Ancestry Acknowledgement
We would also like to acknowledge people of African ancestry whose lives and contributions helped build Canada. We remember those who were taken from their homes through the transatlantic slave trade and those who experienced slavery, discrimination, and exclusion in Canada. We honour the strength, cultures, and achievements of Black communities across the country, and recognize that anti-Black racism continues to affect many individuals and families today
Our Commitment to Reconciliation and Racial Equity
At NIP, we are committed to reconciliation and racial equity. We aim to create welcoming and inclusive programs and services, support diverse communities, provide opportunities for learning, build and foster partnerships with Indigenous and Black-led organizations, and remove barriers that prevent people from accessing opportunities and services.
We recognize that reconciliation and racial justice require ongoing attention, action and accountability. ) All of us at NIP will continue to listen, learn and reflect on our actions. We will show respect to each other, and work with other community members to build a more inclusive, equitable, and caring community for everyone.
