Invitation to a very special program, free, at Toronto City Hall2007-11-06 13:00 2007-11-06 15:00 Etc/GMT-4 Toronto City Hall, Council Chambers 100 Queen Street West, Nathan Phillips Square Free Admission --- Wheel Chair Accessible --- Please tell your friends ! In the week preceding Remembrance Day observances on November 11th, our 15th annual forum will celebrate the Canadian values and resulting social progress born out of the hardship and sacrifice experienced by those who remember the Great Depression and World Wars. Today, too many younger Canadians take for granted the social benefits earlier generations worked hard to put in place. In response, this program will provide historical context and define what is meant by social progress. It will honour our accomplishments as a society, since the ‘dirty’ 1930s. We will assess the composition and present state of Canada’s social safety net and suggest what more is needed to address our foreseeable concerns in order to foster that ‘kinder, gentler society’ that should be an example for the rest of the world. Forum speakers include leading historian of Canadian social welfare policy, Allan Irving, Professor, School of Social Work, King’s University College, University of Western Ontario; Shirley Douglas, actor, social activist, Order of Canada recipient, and champion of Canadian Medicare; special appearances by Toronto Mayor David Miller and by actor Eric Peterson of Street Legal, This Is Wonderland and Corner Gas fame; and forum moderator, award winning journalist, Ian Brown, host of CBC’s Talking Books and the anchor of Human Edge and The View From Here, Canada’s pre-eminent television documentary series on TVOntario. Award Ceremony: An integral part of the forum program will be the inaugural presentation of the annual Alexander Gorlick Humanitarian Award to Shirley Douglas for her life-long dedication to social justice and the preservation and enhancement of Medicare.
