Programs and Services
Information And Referral Services We offer information on various community, government and social services in the Downtown Toronto community. We help people access services that would improve the quality of their lives. Please give us a call at 416-924-2543 or visit us at our office on the second floor of the Parliament Public Library. Case Management, including Crisis Intervention We offer supportive counseling and ensure that appropriate services are in place to meet the multiple needs of our clients. Settlement, Translation and Interpretation We offer services to newcomers and immigrants who need support integrating into the community. We help them overcome the cultural and language barriers and increase their sense of independence. Interpretation and Translation: Our multilingual staff are able to interpret and translate for community residents who speak Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Serbian-Croatian, Sinhalese, Spanish, Tamil, and Urdu. Immigrant Women's Support Group: We offer education workshops and social activities on a regular basis for immigrant Chinese women who live in Regent Park and St. James Town. Assistance in filling out forms: We assist community residents who face language barriers or experience literacy issues fill out government forms or apply for government benefits (e.g. Employment Insurance applications, Old Age Security Applications, Passport applications etc). Various forms can also be picked up from our office. Housing Trusteeship Program A service that is aimed specifically at helping individuals maintain their rental accommodations on a pre-authorized basis. Budget Counseling on a fixed income. Traditional Trusteeship service. Toronto Rent Bank Program The Rent Bank is an innovative program that offers interest-free loans for rental arrears to families who face eviction. It helps families on the brink of eviction to work on other means of improving their life situation with our support. The Loan Fund is not for first and last month's rent. Rent Bank - Chinese Rent Bank - Tamil Rent Bank - Spanish Advocacy and Mediation We advocate on behalf of clients when they have difficulties accessing various government services. We also mediate and negotiate on behalf of our clients on issues dealing with housing, social assistance and income maintenance. Self-help Drop In You could find information on employment, community events, community services on our information boards, and pick up brochures and pamphlets on a variety of government, community and social services from our drop-in area. Mail and Message Services We receive phone messages and mail for those who need a contact phone number and address to stay in contact with family members, friends, and find employment and housing. Internet Access Free public access to the internet as well as basic training provided by the partners of ETIA (East Toronto Internet Access): Community Outreach and Education We offer regular community educational workshops for the community (e.g. Peer Nutrition, tenants' rights etc). Income Tax Clinic Our Annual Income Tax Clinic is a partnership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Volunteer Chartered Accountants assist low-income households file their income returns every year, free of charge. Over 100 income tax returns for low-income households in the community every year. Our Income Tax Clinic is held between February and April every year. Please contact us at 416-924-2543 for more information. The Toronto Winter Warmth Fund The Toronto Winter Warmth Fund provides grants of up to $450 to low-income house holds who are residents of Toronto and are in arrears with Toronto Hydro or Enbridge Gas Distribution.
